The hands will belong to Henry puppet, who is under the wraps until the project is completed.
Henry is slender, with long-fingered bony-knuckled hands.
So, here are his hands in clay:
As always, I am using the tools and materials that we sell at Morezmore and name them as I go along.
Burn the cotton fuzz of the pipe cleaner wire.
MORE about pipe cleaners wire
Cut to about 2″ length.
square tubes 5/32″, which telescopically fit over square tubes 1/8″ which are on his arms.
Sew the wires together.
JB weld epoxy to secure wire in the tube.
Snip the fingers to the size of the mold.
Make finger bones out of styrene tubing 3/32″ (2.4mm)
Platsil Gel 10 silicone rubber
Naphtha
Acrylic paint in Flesh color
Ease Release
pipette
Disposable brushes
toothpicks
mini spatulas
Scale able to register 0.1 gram
Recipe:
1 gram of Platsil Gel 10 Part B (it is easier to start with Part B, as it is more viscous and takes longer to mix).
0.2 gram of acrylic paint.
MIX well, take your time
0.5 gram of naphtha (use pipette or eye dropper)
MIX well, take your time
1 gram of Platsil Gel 10 Part A
MIX well and move FAST. You have about 2 minutes to mix and start applying, another 4 minutes to apply all.
. .
Paint thin beauty skin layer on the mold.
Paint hands in potential trouble areas – finger tips to cover sharp wire, knuckles, webs between fingers and also the sides of the hands/fingers where the seams will be.
. .
Cure upside down so that silicone does not slide off the finger tips.
Allow to cure – 30-60 minutes.
Mix fresh batch of silicone – triple the recipe
Fill the mold cavities to the brim.
Put the armature in.
Add more silicone so that the armature is drenched through and covered well.
Stretch foam will nicely absorb the silicone.
Close the mold and secure with mold rubber bands
Allow to cure – 30-60 minutes. Remaining silicone in the mixing cup will give you a clue if the hands inside the mold are ready.
..
Carefully demold with something sharp and strong like an icepick
Trim
Mini scissors (pristine and dedicated to this and only this task – trimming silicone seams).
I made two pairs of hands, the lighter ones were the first. The color depends on the amount of acrylic flesh paint in the mix.
Here are photos of the first set of hands.
Amazing process. Have you tried the new Cosclay flexible polyclay for hands yet?

Lilypat, did you have a chance to try it yet? I got a package during the initial kickstarter phase. I haven’t tried it yet, but am very keen to determine how it compares to working with the platinum silicone 10 durometer. @Morezmore, your post is so beautifully explained. I feel so emboldened to attempt making my first silicone hands and I’ll give it a shot to try out the cosclay too. I feel like you are a national treasure.

No, I haven’t opened a package yet. Partly due to lily-livered cowardice (!) and partly to the fact that I have no fewer than 3 Prosculpt dolls in various stages of done-ness, out of 5 that I started at the beginning of shelter-in-place. Starting in on one more completely different kind of clay seems a bit overwhelming. But as I finish off those projects, I will have run out of excuses and the Cosclay Period will begin for me 😀

Thank you for these they will probably help me with sculpting hands but I’m afraid that this is not exactly what I’m looking for. Would it be possible to get maybe like a mold of the hands or a clay replica?

Henry was a commission which is currently in filming. I am going to hold on to the molds just in case they break him and send him back to me for repair.

oops, yes, I missed it. I don’t have Henry’s hands – they are attached to the maquette which was shipped to the customer. After I clear out my plate, I will be start taking commissions, although probably not body parts

Probably after July. Body parts are not as interesting as puppet commissions but maybe I will be needing money, so I am not saying no. Thank you

Hi. Since I found your page through your ebay store I decided to try my hand at sculpting my own OOAK figure/doll, and have sculpted two heads (so far) out of Cosclay & I’m currently waiting on my second order from you… However, I think I’m going to have trouble making the hands. I won’t ask for advice on how to sculpt hands,as you have stated that above. But I do have some questions:
1.You have several methods of making silicone hands, is the one pictured above the “best”, and/or easiest, in your opinion?
2.The tobacco pipe cleaners, are they the kind sold in craft stores, or are they “tougher”? (Sorry, I don’t know as I don’t smoke.)
3.Do I really need to burn the fuzz off of the pipe cleaners? Can’t I just use a tool to pull it off?
Thank You.

Hi, Ian, glad to answer 🙂
– it is about the same method for silicone hands, in general, plus minus some improvements.
Please see the latest “tweaks” on Patreon (free access on the latest project)

and on youtube:
The tobacco cleaners are different, thinner and tougher. If you drop me a note next time you order, I will send you a sample.
It is possible to cut off fuzz with scissors. No way to pull it off, but trimming is possible, like this:
If you have more question, don’t hesitate to write. Thank you
