Nikolai (Part 1) – Armature

Nikolai is Igor‘s twin brother, or rather Igor-2.0. If all goes as planned, Nikolai will be starring in a stop motion film.

A group of stop motion enthusiasts are making a collaboration stop motion project. Each of us take a “job” (script, storyboard, character concept sketches, puppet fabrication, props, animation, editing, music and foley, etc.). We work together to make a short film, and, in return, get the shared rights to the films – for promotion, experience or resume. No pay, just the rights to the video use.

If you would like to join us, please join the public Facebook Group So You Want to Make a Stop Motion Film.
Nikolai The Troll Group is currently a private group and will be opened for public once the film is made.

While I was making Igor, there were quite a few times that I had an improvement idea after it was too late to implement it. Nikolai will be made using those ideas. Also I will be testing a different ways to make the facial expressions – a collection of replacement faces.

The new design features for Nikolai:
Shrugging-slouching shoulders
2 points of rig access (in the middle of the back and in the butt)
2 points of feet tie-down access (in the toe and and in the heel)
Joint range limiters on elbows, knees, ankles.
Removable head, hands and feet on square telescopic tubing.
Face plates (7 of them, I think)
Slightly larger hands and feet
Better haircut.

Nikolai has a Humanly Posable Armature. Type: HPA-M3 Superflex.
The kit is available for purchase:

New hands – a little larger and more trollish. They got slightly burned, but will still work for making the mold from them.

3 face plates out of 7:

Also, I just got an idea how to make them attached to the head in such a way so that the faces appear seamless with the head.
Will test it and put the photos if it works.

The prototype faces are made out of Living Doll Polymer Clay (Beige). They will be cast in silicone.
The eyes are 5mm delrin ball bearings, made as described HERE.

  1. Oh, those expressions! Looking forward to seeing how you made the face plates join well. That’s been a problem for me using polyclay.
