mini calipers

Anatomy images. I found them on a website that sells medical anatomy models. I resized them in 1/6 scale and printed and laminated them with clear scotch tape.
I wish I found these in the beginning! Now I see that my head and hands are a bit too large.
Well, will do better on the next doll! 🙂

For a while I have been thinking that I would like to spend some time on learning proper muscle anatomy. Now it is a good time to do it.

I have some progress to report.
On the basis of the new anatomy images, I made a new pair of hand armatures.
Compare to the old ones – the new ones are much smaller. Will complete the hands later.

.I decided to try the thinner cotton wire (32 Ga) this time, instead of 30 Ga. (at the store it is M00761).
Works just as well, as the thicker 30 Ga wire. The fingers are still quite strong.

Also, the armature is new. I had a choice of trying to adjust the old armature which was made before I found these anatomy images to the new proportions or just make another armature. It was easier to make a new one.

What is new in this armature, other than more precise proportions from my new favorite anatomy image, is that the connection at the crotch is now slightly domed and raised (instead of straight), so that I can sculpt between the legs without hitting the wire.

Here is what I have now, baking.

Here are the images, by the way. I love them:
The game plan is the following:
Stage 1 – Armature (skeleton)
Stage 2 – Sculpt Bulk (rib cage, pelvis with internal organs, large muscles – roughly), bake at this point.
Stage 3 – Sculpt external muscles, smooth out to create skin, add head, hands, feet. Bake again everything.

The plan is working, slightly modified. Of course. No plan survives its first contact with reality. But I like it, and will use it again.
Stage 1 – Armature (skeleton)
Stage 2 – Sculpt bulk (rib cage, pelvis with internal organs, large muscles – roughly), bake at this point.
Stage 3 – Draw the muscle “map”, put into the pose, sculpt external muscles, smooth out to create skin, remove modules, bake torso.
Stage 4 – Add head, hands, feet modules (final, on magic smooth epoxy gel). Sculpt connections (neck, legs, arms). Bake everything.

I just finished Stage 3 and now I am making hands modules. After I finish the hands – Stage 4. Here is what I have.

The hands are made and baked. I can put all modules (head, hands and feet) on the doll permanently.
The glue is Magic Smooth epoxy gel. Some gel – into the tube, some gel on the armature.

Put the module on the armature. Smooth the epoxy on the connection with a wet finger.

.Final check for the pose and angles of the head, hands and feet. After the epoxy is cured, I will sculpt the neck, arms and legs.
